Highway toll station is the bottleneck of freeway. And with the rapid development of ETC(Electronic Toll Collection) technology, ETC and MTC mixed toll station has become the major form of highway toll station. It plays a significant role in improving traffic capacity, shorten vehicle delay, reducing energy consumption and emissions, after the reasonable reconstruction of ETC lanes. This paper comprehensive analysis the influencing factors of highway toll station traffic characteristics, explore the suitable scheme of setting toll station ETC lanes and compare the different schemes based on traffic utility.First of all, this paper clarifies the basic concepts of highway toll station and ETC lane toll, discusses the classification criteria and the basic composition for investigation analysis, theoretical research and simulation.Secondly, based on the analysis of vehicles and drivers behavior on the highway toll station, this paper discusses the distribution of vehicle, the service time, leaving time and delay time by using real data. Using theoretical analysis, paper gives the calculation of MTC, ETC single and multi lane capacity models.Thirdly, this paper discusses the effects of the number and location of toll roads, the type of vechicles and the proportion of ETC vehicles. On the basis of this, paper gives the calculation method of social benefit cost of ETC and builtes the traffic utility model of highway toll station.Finally, this paper uses VISSIM to model and simulate the highway toll station, analyzing the effects of the number and location of ETC lane, the proportion of ETC vehicles. Based on the orthogonal experiment, this paper studies the primary order of the factors influenced the ETC lanes setting, and give the calculation method of the optimal ETC lane setting for different types of toll stations. On this basis, using Hangzhou toll station as an example, researching the difference of traffic characteristics and social benefit and putting forward according to situation and future highway toll station ETC setting reconstructions.
