Following the rapid development of real estate industry in China, a tower crane as necessary heavy machinery has been widely used in the construction industry. However due to the structure of the tower crane itself and the working environment; accidents caused by the tower crane occasionally occur. Therefore it should draw the attention of the construction industry and regulators. To this end, we have designed a tower crane safety monitoring system based on ARM microcontroller, to monitor the own parameter of the tower crane, and to receive the ones from nearby tower crane, trying to avoid accidents caused by the tower crane itself and collisions.This paper covers the software design of a tower crane safety monitoring system. The software system is designed according to the requirements, focusing on the modules for main monitoring system, parameters processing, data access, wireless communications and program input and output. Through the processing of hoist, hook height, trolley displacement, arm angle, tilt angle, control box temperature, wind speed, location, and running parameters from other tower crane, accident risk of the tower crane when running is real-time monitored. When the accident risk is detected it generates relay control signals to cut off the power supply of corresponding motors, ensure the safety of tower crane operation, notify operator of the risk and upload information of illegal operation to the remote monitoring server and record that to SD card. The graphical user interface of working and parameter settings for tower crane is also designed to achieve the graphical display when running, shows the running parameters, and provides many features such as settings of parameters and ground obstacles, including system components testing.Proved by actual test results, the tower crane safety monitoring system is reliable, and meet the design requirements, accepted by end-user.
