With the economic development and speeded-urbanization and motorization from 21 th Century, Big city's traffic conflict has become increasingly severe and prominent. Urban road's cross-section design is the key part of design of urban road, it consists of vehicle lanes, pavements, medians etc., and research about it have great meaning for study of road capacity and safety, using efficiency of urban land, cityscapes and etc.This paper firstly described the various types in section design and summarized the methods in auxiliary lane design in traffic organization and their applicability, and meanwhile analyzed the present study status of cross-section design at home and abroad, and take the cities of USA, Japan and China as cases to present their respective characteristics in cross-section design.According to the current situation and development plan of road net and cross-section design in Tianjin City, incorporation the traffic demand of this city's development, this paper pointed out the shortcomings existing in its present road cross-section design. Against these shortcomings, through study of the road's transportation and spatiality, this paper raised a design method of cross-section with the mutual coordination between the road's transportation and life needs. Namely, the transportation requirement of a road must have a traffic capacity matching its traffic requirement, the design of a life-nature road must take people's requirement as the highest priority.On the basis of above status and theory study, this paper proposed the thought of function design of road cross-section in Tianjin City, suggested the transformation scheme of existing road cross-design and principle of future design. Wish this paper can provide a technical support for Tianjin city's related authorities in city plan, design and administration.
