Raw soil is one of the oldest traditional building materials in China and even the worldwide. Due to many advantages, raw soil materials and adobe house as most effective way to achieve the green ecological concept the native style show significant research value in the current new rural construction, in the beautiful countryside construction and protection of traditional residence. To enhance the security and durability of the traditional adobe dwellings, a new type of adobe bricks and construction process are developed based on the study of Shanxi loess. Besides, the mechanical properties of the new adobe brick masonry are studied.The compressive strength test of adobe bricks with 18 different mix proportions is conducted. The optimal mix proportion is designed based on the mechanics and economy indexes, and the mix proportion is applied into the test of adobe brick masonry.Based on the 8 groups of cube compressive strength test, three mortar mixes with superior performance are proposed. The shear strength test of the three groups of new adobe masonry is conducted, and the failure modes of adobe masonry with different mortar mixes are discussed. The formula of the average shear strength for new adobe masonry is proposed. Based on the axial compression strength test of three groups of new adobe masonry, the compressive strength, elastic modulus, Poisson's ratio are achieved. Besides, the formula of the average compressive strength for new adobe masonry is proposed. Finally, the level low cyclic loading test of the four new adobe walls is conducted, and the shear strength, stiffness degradation, deformation energy,energy loss and other basic performance indicators are obtained. The data provides support for the shake table tests of new adobe houses.The above results show that the new technology for improving the performance of the clay brick masonry is feasible and effective, and the construction technology is complete. Compared with the traditional adobe masonry, the basic mechanics and durability performances of new adobe masonry improve significantly. The study of new adobe masonry has certain technical promotion prospects in the field of rural construction.
