In China, the current total water resources volume is very limited, it's needed to takereasonable measures in water conservation and leakage control to optimize theallocation of water resource. As for the water supply industries, how to effectivelyquantify the leakage of water distribution system and reduce the amount of leakagebecome an important task, which needs to be solved as soon as possible. Study on howto quantify the amount of leakage in water distribution system has practicalsignificance. There are three methods to calculate the amount of leakage, which are commonlyemployed internationally: water balance analysis, minimum night flow method andanalysis based on hydraulic model of leakage. This paper analyzed the deficiencies ofthe three methods respectively, and they can not precisely calculate the amount ofleakage. At the same time, it is very difficult to reflect the true variations of leakage inthe water distribution system. So far, there is no uniform and precise method to calculate the amount of leakageinternationally. This paper combines Kalman filtering theory which is commonly usedin the area of information control to build state equation and observation equation inwater distribution system, and propose a new method for the analysis and calculation ofthe amount of leakage. The main contents include:1.Analyze the variation of leakage in water distribution system under differentsituations, such as different water resources number, different topologies of waterdistribution system and different points of leakage through leakage experimentalsimulation.2.Discuss the feasibility of utilizing Kalman filtering theory to analyze leakage inwater distribution system, and establish water distribution system mathematical modelbased on Kalman filtering theory, then make some analysis on variations of leakage.3.Take an actual water distribution system project as an example, and apply thewater distribution system mathematical model which constructed through leakageexperimental simulation into the project, then make some analysis on variations ofleakage. Compare leakage rate calculated through Kalman filtering algorithm withproduction rate, the results show that difference between the two is only1.22%, so themethod of utilizing Kalman filtering theory to analyze leakage in water distributionsystem is reliable. In this paper, it analyzes reasons which could lead to occurrence of leakage in waterdistribution system; proposes reasonable and effective technical measures and programsto reduce the amount of leakage in urban water distribution system and provides a basisfor the national regulatory authorities when evaluate the management level and service quality of water supply enterprises. As for water supply companies, research on how toeffectively quantify the leakage of water distribution system has potential economicbenefits.
