Color is the most sensitive visual element of clothing since it is the fastest communication of information,the strongest expression of emotion,the strongest impact of visual and aesthetic perception in fashion cognition and consumption.Although color combinations have been well documented,their results still remained conflicting and confusing,in which some studies suggested that the similar the color,the more beautiful the clothing,while other research results were contrary.In the previous study,geometrical figures rather than realistic products,such as clothing,were primarily served as stimuli,as well as further behavioral and ERP method were ignored.What's more,the previous research mainly focused on bi-color combinations,in the actual life,however,the clothing is combined by various colors.Therefore,multi-color combinations were taken into account to investigate in current research.Two experiments to explore the aesthetic evaluation of color combinations were conducted in this study.In experiment 1,the clothing pictures with different color combinations,color contrasts and color numbers were designed as stimulus factors in order to systematically assess the influence of clothing color combination on the aesthetic behaviors;In experiment 2,on the basis of the behavioral experiment,event-related potential(ERP)technology was carried out to further investigate the neural mechanism when subjects made aesthetic judgments with the most beautiful and the lest beautiful color combinations.There are the following findings:(1)The stronger the color contrast,the less beautiful the clothing it is,no matter in bi-color or in tri-color combinations;(2)Clothing with bi-color combinations is more beautiful than that with tri-color combinations;(3)The complexity of color combination meanings hindered the aesthetic processing,implying the difficulty of aesthetic decision-making for bi-color combinations is higher compared with that for tri-color combinations;(4)In the process of aesthetic,the physical properties of thecolor contrasts or the color numbers have no effect on the early perception processing;(5)The clothing of bi-color combinations elicited greater amplitudes of P2 and N2 than those of the tri-color combinations,further revealed the difficulty of aesthetic processing of bi-color combinations in the aesthetic experience;(6)Larger N2 amplitudes was observed in right hemisphere compared to left hemisphere and midline of brain,suggesting the aesthetic processing presents obvious hemisphere partial lateralization;(7)The advanced aesthetic processing mainly occurred in the parietal region,specifically,less beautiful clothing induced greater P300 amplitude than beautiful ones,indicating that the brain mobilized more resources to pay more attention to less beautiful clothing.With the help of the technology of the behavioral science and neuroscience research,the present study not only discovered the influence of clothing color combined by its contrasts and numbers on the aesthetic behavior,but also revealed the brain mechanism in the aesthetic experience.Therefore this research has higher theoretical and application value.
