Quejinxiu uses materials such as peacock feather thread, golden thread as main embroidery threads, as well as other kinds of embroidery threads, combines techniques such as embroidery, tapestry, knitting, sculpting and etc. to create glamorous and exquisite works. According to historical records, Quejinxiu began during the Warring States Period, blossomed in the Tang,Song and Yuan Dynasty. This rare embroidery technique was merely restricted to royal courts and Buddhist practices. It is the pinnacle of royal embroidery art, an intangible cultural heritage of China and an important part of traditional Chinese embroidery culture. The artistic features of Quejinxiu are fascinating and possess irreplaceable cultural significance. This paper systematically analyses the origin of Quejinxiu, its development and current status quo through field studies. Based on these studies, thoroughly examines materials, tools, embroidery techniques, color matching and pattern decoration. Quejinxiu is close to extinction in the modern era, therefore it is necessary to study it in order to protect and inherit the technique. It will be a difficult task to pass on these techniques to our next generation due to its distinctiveness. Therefore, innovative ideas are required in order to enhance our understanding of traditional craftsmanship and revamp the old with modern techniques and materials. Furthermore, this paper explores the problems and challenges we are facing regarding cultural inheritance of Quejinxiu, and provides a practical reference for the application of Quejinxiu in contemporary fashion design.
