Study On Structure And Craft Of Traditional Costumes Of Edge

The edge patterns sculpt have always played an indispensable role in traditional Chinese costumes since ancient time. The edge patterns sculpt are to sew the clothes edges where thread residues are easy to fall off, including collars, costume front, cuffs, slits on two sides, lower hems etc. Usually these areas are sewed with fabrics and form edgings with functions. The paper studies and combs the shape and craft changes of traditional costumes’ edge patterns in different historical eras, explores their decoration structure features and inner essences, provides reasonable grounds for the inheritance and innovation application of traditional costume culture.The study focuses on traditional costumes’ edge patterns, summarizes the effects of the ritual systems of the historical eras on the shapes and structures of the traditional edge patterns, explores the edge patterns sculpt’ craft. First, based on historical development, it analyzes edge patterns, classifies edge patterns into straight yarn edge patterns and oblique yarn edge patterns. Edge patterns of straight yarn fabrics can protect and strengthen costumes’ edges. Edge patterns of oblique yarn fabrics have strong plasticity and can be used for edge decoration. Based on different crafts, these edge patterns can show different structures and decoration means. Next, it chooses the edge patterns sculpt’ materials(materials, colors, patterns) and crafts(edge, roll, inlay) as the study object to explore edge patterns’ shapes and decoration crafts of various costumes, summarize the relationship between their shape features edge pattern fabrics’ layer quantity. Finally, based on three ethnic minorities’ traditional costumes, namely, Miao, Bouyei, She, it explores their own edge patterns’ crafts. It aims at studying traditional costumes’ edge pattern crafts based on material costumes.Based on literature analysis and physical research, the paper studies traditional costumes’ edge patterns from edge patterns’ shapes and crafts. It adopts intuitive graphic description on edge patterns’ evolution, like size change, bending and straightening change, cutting way, decoration craft. It summarizes traditional costumes’ shape change rules, from narrowness to width, from straightening to bending, from simpleness to complexity, from plane to solid. It explores how these factors’ collocation has an effect on costumes’ shapes, including edge pattern fabrics’ thickness, level, texture, color and pattern. Some study grounds are provided for us to explore Chinese traditional costumes’ essence further, understand edge patterns’ costume features and inner craft structures. The paper provides the reliable theoretical foundation for modern design and reference for traditional costumes’ innovative design.
