The Production Of Map Symbol Library And Design Of Map Symbolization Module Based On ArcGIS

Map symbol is map's diagram language. Its quality directly affects people's acquaintance of geographic information, and therefore designing and making excellent map symbols and map symbol library is essential to geographic information system. Map symbolization is the research focus of visualization of spatial information and also its fast implementation is an important criterion for judging the GIS system.GIS has a built-in symbol library, but cann't meet the demands of charting and mapping for its less quantity and inconformity of China's landform mapping standard. Therefore, we need to establish a symbol library in line with our country's topographic mapping standard. GIS software provides a symbolic function in both manual and full automatic way. The former is with cumbersome process and poor portability, the latter is with good portability and also can be reused which is the optimal choice.In this paper, I take the ArcGIS software as a platform and according to our country's schematism standard of large scale topographic map to design and make 1:1000 map symbol library that meets the drawing requirement in China, and design map symbolization module on the base of components supplied by ArcGIS Engine and C#.NET technology. The data source of this paper is from digital Hebi large scale topographic map data. The main work is as follow:(1)Making Map Symbols. According to ?GB/T 20257.1-2007 Geographic symbol for national fundamental scale maps-Part 1:Specifications for cartographic symbols 1:500 1:1000 & 1:2000 topographic maps?,make use of mapping software AutoCAD to make symbols and output bmp format pictures; The pictures are loaded into FontCreator and then adjust the symbols and convert them to ttf font file which will be placed into the Fonts folder.(2)Create Map Symbol Library.Make new map symbol library in Style Manager and add them into MarkerSymbol to finish the making of point symbol library; in the symbol property editor supplied by Style Manager, make line and plane library by the combination and superposition to symbols.(3)Design Map Symbolization Module. Realize the interface of map symbolization provided by ArcGIS Engine and design the symbolic function module of unique value upon GB field. In the process of symbolization, edit many for one coding schedule configuration file to improve the symbolic flexibility; for the data unable to find a match symbol, use the default symbol to realize symbolization; for symbolization of point data, setting the point's angle field so that the point data with angle can be rotated by angle accordingly.
