Nanchang’s economy has leapt forward and its urbanization level has become higher and higher since we followed the policy of reform and opening. Social development provides more efficient service and material enjoyment to citizens. However, it also brings a series of problems to the sustainable development of the city. The development of urban forestry is of great significance in solving environmental issues raised in the process of urbanization in Nanchang. It also makes contributions to protect and maintain the urban biodiversity, improve city competitiveness, and achieve a sustainable development in Nanchang.Taking Nanchang urban forestry as the research subject, the paper formulates the related theories and the basic situation of urban forestry in Nanchang. Based on questionnaire survey and site investigation, we found that Nanchang citizens have a low cognitive level of urban forestry, which affects citizens’initiatives in taking part in urban forestry construction. Besides, with a certain amount of data base about the current status of urban forestry in Nanchang, the paper analyses the current situation of urban forestry in Nanchang objectively. In conclusion, there are four main factors restricting it from developing. Firstly, it is the resource condition including forestland, water and forest. Secondly, the economic development, such as population, economic development, capital, and science and technology input, is also the restraining factor. Thirdly, related systems, for instance, laws and regulations, formulation of plans, divisional management and forms of propaganda are as well connected to urban forestry development. Finally, management mechanism, industrial development, and theoretical research, i.e., these management restrictions are another constraint.Furthermore, the restraining factors above would be thoroughly discussed in this paper. The analysis of results shows that the weight of these four factors above is 0.4049,0.3040,0.1746 and 0.1165. In other words, the resource condition has the greatest effect on the development of urban forestry and it accounts for 40.39% of all factors. And 30.4 percent is the restraining of economic development. The proportion of related systems’constraint is 17.46% while management mechanism’s is 11.65%. The proportion of 14 secondary indicators is:forestland(19.87%), water(11.33%), forest(9.29%), population(3.96%), economic development(9.42%), capital(9.88%), science and technology input(7.14%), laws and regulations(6.75%), formulation of plans(6.81%), divisional management(2.97%), forms of propaganda(0.94%), management mechanism(6.14%), industrial development(2.52%), and theoretical research(2.99%). To sum up, pertinence strategies will be put forward according to the restraining factors above so as to provide some reference to the urban forestry in Nanchang afterwards.
