Key talent is the core sources of enterprise in modern society. Fierce competition in talent market makes key talent management to be one of the priority enterprise management issues. The definition and management of the key talents has become one of the kernel issues on the current human resource work.This study takes the practice of SD Company’s key talent career management for an example under the background of deepening state-owned enterprise reform. SD Company has done many efforts in position system building, career map building, career level and qualifications defining and career developing during these three years, which were well accepted by their employees. However, in this study we find that there are still some areas to be improved by investigation. The main problems include:1) The targets of key talent management are not comprehensive; 2) Career management system has many faultiness, such as the operation method of career channel missing, incomplete criteria of career levels and process of assessment; 3) Coaching and aiding for employee career development has not been carried out; 4) HRM (Human resource management) team building cannot satisfy the requirement of SD Company’s talent management.Combining with the related theory, some suggestions are put forward in details:1) efficient key talent planning to clarify the criteria and assessment process of talent; 2) improving career development criteria and career level assessment process; 3) paying close attention on employee career development and implementing individual career planning and exploiting, and building career files system; 4) strengthening SD Company’s HRM team building and talent management function.This study will contribute to help SD Company to strengthen the management of key talents’ careers. It is also helpful to similar state-owned enterprises.
