In current market-oriented and knowledge-based economy, innovation plays an increasingly important role in promoting and supporting economic development. Innovation is the flow of knowledge and in a value-added process, knowledge flows among companies, universities and research institutes, resulting in a synergistic effect. Knowledge creation, transfer, sharing and use among synergistic innovation subjects complete the re-combination of innovative elements and put forward higher requirements for communication among heterogeneous participants.Previous studies focused on synergistic innovation and innovative elements, but paid less attention to mechanism of elements influence. This paper focuses on the main innovation element of knowledge and its synergistic innovation mechanisms. Synergistic innovation subjects face many communication problems. In addition, there is a negotiated space for knowledge creation, scene construction, knowledge flow and sharing among different participants. The "trading zone theory", named by Peter Galison, studies three elements, namely, sub-cultures, languages and the trading zone and explain the problem of communication between different disciplines, synergistic innovation participants negotiate with each other in accordance with the norms of innovation process. In essence, this is a kind of trading activity characterized by flow of knowledge. Based on the trading zone theory, this paper explores synergistic innovation mechanism.The knowledge of the materialize processes and the flow of materialized knowledge are the blind spots of cooperative innovation mechanism. Scientific instruments are a product of materialized scientific theories and have properties of knowledge and special meaning of physical knowledge with respect to the language aspect of knowledge. Scientific instruments construct knowledge along with the theory. Scientific instruments link technological corporation, governments, research institutions, universities, technical intermediary agencies and users to innovate. This paper explains knowledge flows in new dimension of scientific instruments. The innovation activities making use of scientific instruments can show the synergistic innovation mechanism clearly.This paper employs empirical case study. It systematically studies leasing services of scientific instruments to explain mechanism of knowledge flow in the process of synergistic innovation using trading zone theory. It provides theoretical support to break the bottleneck of technology innovation. The paper analyzes the communication role of scientific instruments in the process of knowledge creation, scene construction, knowledge flow and sharing. The paper finally makes recommendations on how to settle communication problems among different participants in the innovation chain.
