Research On Competitiveness Of Vietnam’s State-owned Commercial Banks

With further accelerate of the economic globalization and financialglobalization, economic competition especially financial competitiveness is increasedfiercely. Today, commercial banks are still the backbone of Vietnam’s financialsystem. Five state-owned commercial banks in Vietnam have an important position inthe national economy. Therefore, these banks of business situation not only directlyaffect the stability of Vietnam’s banking sector and the financial sector, but also affectthe national economy’s healthy development. For that reason, the government aroundthe world, financial institutions, experts and scholars are paying attention on theresearch of state-owned commercial banks competitiveness.After Vietnam has become a member of WTO, with the further of opening upfinancial market, Vietnam’s state-owned commercial banks will face greaterchallenges. They face fiercely market competitiveness, how to seize opportunities ofstate-owned commercial banks, meet challenges, gain greater competitive advantage,not only related to the development themselves, but also related to the smoothprogress of Vietnam’s reform and the improvement and development of the marketeconomy system. Therefore, state-owned commercial banks must enhance itscompetition force.Based on basical theories of the general competitiveness and banking industrycompetitiveness, in this paper we will analyze Vietnam’s state-owned commecialbanks competitiveness situation. Depending on some evaluation criteria such asfinancial capability, human resources level, technology capability, managementcapability, product and service capabilities, reputation and brand value of capacityand distribution system in order to evalute Vietnamese state-owned commercial bankscompetitiveness; in the same time, based on the China’s reform and improving thebanking system competitiveness experience, we get some countermeasures andsuggestions.
