In the past three years, the engineering cost consultation industry output value of China’saverage annual growth rate of more than15%. The total output value of the whole industryhas reached more than40Billion yuan in2013, the total number of employees are more than160thousand people. It has become a good scale consulting service industry. But there are afew problems in the industry at present, the main bottleneck is the current mainstream ofengineering cost software and technical means cannot meet the industry demand. Largeamount of computation work need to be completed by manual or simple computational tools,engineering quantity and price calculation or audit of project cost consultation personneloccupies more than95%of the time. It’s easy to be missed fault calculation, etc. The errorrate is generally5-10%, or even higher. Low-tech has caused some problems, the value ofaverage per capita of engineering cost consulting industry is low, the scope of business isnarrow, serve products are limited etc.Building information modeling (BIM) is a multidimensional data model, withvisualization, parametric, digital simulation, collaborative, and other characteristics, supportengineering in various calculation. Engineering cost consulting industry can transformdesigned BIM model into counted BIM model by using the calculation rules or relatedparameters. Thus computers will automatic, rapid, complete the calculation, summary ofengineering quantity, reducing more than70%time, and the calculation results are moreobjective and accurate, the result’s error rate is less than1%. BIM technology will liberatethe cost engineers from the tedious repetition, simple work, can concentrate in economicevaluation in pre project, optimize the investment project, risk control and the whole processof the project and even the whole life cycle cost management and other high-end consultingservices, expand the scope of service engineering cost consulting industry.In this paper, taking the actual project as an example, apply BIM technology in theproject transaction and construction phase for the engineering cost consulting service. Theresult found that, compared with the traditional way, BIM technology in engineering costconsulting the project application, saves modeling and engineering75%of computation time, the calculation results are accurate rate increased more than3%, the overall consulting worktime is reduced by about50%, the number of cost engineers required is reduced by half, theremarkable comprehensive benefit.Although the BIM technology at the present stage only applied in engineering costconsulting work in our country a few projects, but with the perfection of the BIM technologyand its wide application in engineering construction, we believe that in the near future, theBIM technology will get the promotion and application of full depth in engineering costconsulting industry. Engineering cost consultation industry should actively cultivate BIMtechnology application talents, the establishment of BIM professional team, actively carry outthe BIM application test and application. Government departments and the engineering costindustry associations should support applied research and extension of BIM technology inengineering cost consulting industry from the policies and regulations, standard specificationand funds, and promote industry technology innovation and sustainable and healthydevelopment.
