With such an international communication and cooperation trend, Industry-University-Research International Collaborative Innovation (IURICI) has become anew way of Industry-University-Research Collaboration (IURC). IURICI has beentaken as an accelerator for building Chinese IURC Development Project, because itnot only contains features of general IURC, but also includes characteristics ofinternational cooperation. This study focuses on the risks caused by IURICI. The goal of the study is toanswer the two questions: How to assess the risks caused by IURICI? How to controlthe risks? In the part of theory, the paper states the concept, features, patterns, mechanisms, and risks of IURICI. In the part of empirical analysis, on the one hand, the authorassessed the internal risks coming from international collaboration: the intellectualproperty risk, the interaction risk, and the operation risk. The IURICI risk evaluationindex system has been built, through adopting two methods: Rough Set and AnalyticHierarchy Process. On the other hand, the author examined the indirect effect modelof the three IURICI internal risks by collecting data from a questionnaire survey.Based on the indirect effect model result, the following relationships have been found.(1) Resource input is negatively associated with IURICI operation risk.(2)Cooperation relationship quality is negatively associated with IURICI intellectualproperty risk, also with interaction risk.(3) Resource input and cooperationrelationship quality, as two significant risk influence factors, both have positiveeffects on collaboration performance.(4) Neither resource input nor cooperationrelationship quality influences performance through any of the three IURICI internalrisks: the intellectual property risk, the interaction risk, and the operation risk.Based on the empirical results, the author analyzed the path relationships amongthe three variables: risk influence factor, IURICI internal risk, and collaborativeinnovation performance. Several risk control measures have been proposed on thebasis of the empirical results. The findings provide fruitful implications for IURICI risk control, in both theory and practice.
