Chinese-russian Energy Cooperation

Russia plays an important role in the world energy structure. Significant progress has been made since president Putin implement his new policy. With the rapid rise of the Chinese economy, the contradiction between development of domestic energy production and needs become prominent. China’s demand for energy becomes extremely urgent.Since the mid-1990s, Sino-Russian strategic cooperative partnership had been established, which gives a stable external production for domestic reform and economic transformation in these two countries. The highly complementary economical situation gives an important role to the Sino-Russian energy cooperation. In recent years, Sino-Russian energy cooperation has made great progress, and represents a prospective future. China and Russia have many advantages in energy cooperation, as well as problems and shortages. China and Russia should take advantage of their superiority, enhance and deepen their mutual trust, promote the cooperation in all areas.This paper is divided into four parts. In order to analyze the prospect of Sino-Russian cooperation, depth thinking and recommendations have been made. In the first part, specific cooperation areas have been outlines. China and Russia not only cooperate in oil, electricity, nuclear power, gas and coal, but also in arctic project. The second part combed the history of Sino-Russian energy cooperation. Four historical stages-Yeltsin period, Putin and Medvedev, Putin period have been discussed, to find out the problems and challenges. The third part analyzes the feasibility of the Sino-Russian energy cooperation. The complex international situation made the cooperation uncertainly, while the energy security and foreign policy interaction determines the basic direction. The final part mainly discusses the problem in the Sino-Russian cooperation, the impact on Northeast Asia and the Asia Pacific energy region, and the prospect of the cooperation. China and Russia should work together and overcome the obstacles to get a better future.
