Wireless mesh network(WMN) is a wireless network technology, which is different from cellular wireless network and has the outstanding advantages of dynamic self-organizing, self-configuring and low costing, etc. It is one of the hot topics in the field of wireless mobile communication technology. Wireless mesh network is irreplaceable in many special occasions because it can be deployed quickly. The architecture of Software Defined Network(SDN) has the features of interface opening, programmable and control plane separating from forwarding plane separation, etc. SDN is an important direction of development in current communication network. The introduction of SDN thought into WMN can enhance the flexibility and openness of WMN, so Nowadays it has become a new research hotspot about WMN.Wireless mesh network achieves the interoperability between nodes with wireless links. Load balancing is more indispensable because bandwidth resources available are often subject to many restrictions. Using OpenFlow protocol of SDN, we can provide software defined wireless mesh network(wmSDN) with programmable data flow control method. SDN itself has centralized control features, is expected to make it easier to solve the global network load balancing of wmSDN.This paper investigates the background and research status of SDN, analyzes the working mechanism of its main OpenFlow protocol, the basic structure of SDN switch OpenVswitch source code and SDN controller POX source code. We also analyse how to build software defined wireless mesh network simulation platform environment based on NS3 and CORE simulation tools and to carry out relevant experiments, while giving the specific implementation methods. Meanwhile, This paper puts forward a load balancing algorithm for wmSDN characteristics, which is based on comprehensive consideration of the link quality, the gateway load and network topology. Compared with existing methods, this algorithm can also achieve a more fine-grained load balancing according to the type of business. This paper also studies how to achieve the functions of this load balancing algorithm with custom component of SDN controller. The results show that the proposed load balancing algorithm is superior to the traditional OLSR routing algorithm and Round-Robin gateway load balancing algorithm in load balancing performance aspects.
