Science And Technology Report In The Globe And Mail Using Content Analysis

Health news is one of the most important part of science and technology report. It’s also a hot topic in this research area in recent years. This study focuses on health news in the Globe and Mail which is the national newspaper in Canada and tries to find some advantages to learn for Chinese mass media especially the newspapers. It guided by Frame Theory with using content analysis. This paper focused on some aspects like text structure models, theme, titles, references, authors’ backgrounds, and timeliness and so on.There are five basic models of composing text by studying, namely, process model, article model, controversy model, introduction model, Q&A model(ask and answer). The theme is mainly divided into nine categories, namely, disease, diet(food), medicine, public health,life-style, psychology, sports, technology and environment. The greatest concern is disease.It reported new studies most and these new studies have two basic features. One is keeping pace with the world’s most authoritative medical magazines, especially the ones from America, Canada and the United Kingdom. But it paid less attention to the ones from Australia, Asia and other countries. The other one is that it concerned more in eastern Canada and less in western Canada. The numbers of reports are obviously imbalance. The title of the texts are flexible and rigorous according to its narrations in some details like introducing background and references. The attitude to the new medical research and science is more rational and conservative. Reports on hot issues are comprehensive and sustainable.Here are some suggestions for Chinese traditional media especially the newspapers: present data to keep objective; tell some basic information about the study like the methods and research objects; give readers more thinking space by offering more references to the different positions of views; pay attention to the positive impacts of science and technology as well as the negative ones; focus on international trend especially the international conferences; increase interaction with the reader; keep words rigorous, flexible and corrective; be more interesting; report hot issues comprehensively and sustainably.
