Many countries in the world are faced with the shortage and uneven distribution of water resources. Under such a background, many countries built a large number of water transfer projects and irrigation projects. As the main structure form of water diversion and irrigation projects, the operation of the channel is the key factor of the safety of water supply, water supply efficiency and the utilization rate of water resources.The operation of channel has constraints such as disturbance, upper water level, the amplitude of water level and gate opening, while faced with the strong disturbance, nonlinear, hysteresis and strong coupling. So the research on automatic control technology of the channel is of great significance. The numerical simulation of channel is an important method to study and test the channel control algorithm. And the channels usually contain many gates, weirs and other structures, thus their hydraulic condition is complex. So it is necessary to develop an automatic control simulation platform of channel operation which can deal with complicated internal boundary conditions.This paper established one-dimensional unsteady flow model of the open channel, and embedded automatic control interface to connect the automatic control module, realized the automatic control of canal operation, completed the development of automatic control of canal operation simulation platform. The main research contents are as follows:(1) Summarized the channel operation mode, related con cepts of channel control, research progress and applications of domestic and foreign channels automatic control.(2) Developed a Saint-Venant equations based one-dimensional unsteady flow model. Introduced the discharge predict-correct method to deal with the structures of the channels. Thus the model have good simulation effect s on the channel system containing complicated internal boundary conditions.(3) Introduced the basic principle of digital PID control. Embedded an automatic control interface to the unsteady flow model and add a PID control module. Realized the automatic control of canal operation, completed the development of automatic control of canal operation simulation platform.(4) Simulated the constant downstream water level and the constant upstream water level operation modes of the channel using the canal operation simulation platform. Introduced some performance indicators. The two kinds of operation modes are compared using the indicators.
