Wireless Sensor Networks(WSNs) are widespread concerned by academia and industry due to the great application prospect and commercial value. Wireless Sensor Network(WSNs)has been widely used in civil and military. Meter reading(water meter、electric meter and gas meter)is the laborious daily work in real life. Applying WSNs to the area of meter reading, we can solve the problem efficiently by collect the data of nodes in the network automatically. The Automatic Meter Reading System(AMRS) arises at the historic moment.AMRS requires that the data gathering protocol can build the network automatically without human intervention. The base station can still collect the nodes of normal work when there is something wrong in some node; The network needn’t be rebuilt to save the consumption when a new node joining the network. At present, there are some data gathering protocols in the AMRS, such as WM2 RP and PEADG. WM2 RP needs a lot of artificial demand and has a static network topology which is a chain, so that its flexibility is bad; PEADG will rebuild the network topology when a new node joining the network and the base station can’t collect the data of children nodes when there is wrong in some nodes.In this paper, we design a self-organized Extensible fault-tolerant data gathering protocol(SEFDG) for the characteristics and requirements of AMRS. SEFDG can make the initial nodes of the network automatically build a network which has a tree topology, the new node will look for its neighbors which has join in the network, thus it improves the scalability of network. Each node has its parent and backup. When a node is wrong, its children can communicate with base station through backup which ensures the fault tolerance.This paper simulates SEFDG protocol with MATLAB. The simulation results of SEFDG show that the process of data collection can continue collecting data when one node cannot work well. The data collection will not be affected by the faulted node(fault tolerance.). The network structure need not be rebuilt with new node joining the network, and the new node can forwardly find the nodes which have joined the network and the node will select the better nodes as its parent or backup(self-organizing and scalability). What ‘s more, the SEFDG can extend the lifetime of network to a certain degree after the comparison with PEADG on the data gathering rounds.In addition, this paper researches the scenes of isolated nodes, the number of isolated nodes and the strategy decreasing isolated nodes which may appear in SEFDG. The rate of isolated nodes and the total noes is very low in the network which is built by SEFDG protocol. The rounds of data gathering have increased significantly by modifying the end condition of data collection.
