X-ray imaging technology has been widely applied in medical diagnosis, security inspection and industrial radiography. Now the X-ray imaging technology is leading to micro-focus and low radiation dose. The traditional X-ray source is consist of the filament which can emit the electrons. Though, this can satisfy the demands for the new generation X-ray source in electron emission dimension, emission temperature and precise control of the electron emission. As a new kind of electron source, there is no need to be heated for CNT. Also it can be made to a very small scale and can control the emission of electron accurately. So it is ideal for the X-ray source.For traditional X-ray source, the filament needs to be heated before it can emit the electron. So when it is working, the X-ray is always continuous. While in the row scanning system, it will produce a lot useless X-ray radiation. In this paper, research work on the cold cathode X-ray source based on CNTs has been done, which includes the manufacture of the cathode emitter and its field emission test, gate and electron focusing structure design, high pulsed voltage generator design, X-ray tube structure design and final cold cathode X-ray source imaging test.By the way, in this paper we did research work on the pulsed row scanning system based on the cold cathode X-ray source. The pulse sampling X-ray line detecting circuit was designed, and tested with the X-ray source. From the test, we can see that, to meet the same imaging result, the total X-ray radiation dose in the cold cathode X-ray system is just about 30% of the traditional ones. This system can be applied into the current security inspection system, also it can be applied into the CT system, which lies basis on the practice application for the cold cathode X-ray source application.
