The coverage control problem as one of the fundamental issues in wireless sensor networks(WNSs) is a key index that reflects how well an interested area is apperceived. In this work, two different coverage control strategies were proposed to optimize the node residual energy distribution for homogeneous and heterogeneous WNSs.Firstly, the basic principle of virtual force algorithm(VFA) was introduced. In order to solve the low redeployment speed problem of basic VFA, a modified of basic virtual force algorithm(MVFA) proposed by adding an index force to attractive pattern. The numerical simulations have carried out to illustrate that the MVFA can use less time than the VFA to complete the nodes’ moving.Secondly, one of the main most important things in developing the WNSs is to prolong the lifetime of the networks as long as possible. So that, an energy adjustment algorithm with considering the energy consumption for moving displacement, was provided in this works to make the distribution of nodes’ energy more even. According the simulation, the coverage control strategy which is contained the energy adjustment function can make the coefficient of energy distribution decrease about 66%. So the strategy can improve the nodes’ energy distribution. Finally, the coverage control issues for heterogeneous WNSs with different sensing range were considered in this section. An improved VFA method with considering residual energy was developed. The simulations show that the coverage control strategy which we proposed can make the coefficient of energy distribution decrease about 70%. So the strategy can contribute to the improvement of the nodes’ energy distribution.
