The Fabry-Perot etalon is widely used in the area of optical fiber communication and optical fiber sensing. A glass gap F-P etalon lacks of high stability due to its high coefficient of thermal expansion. Two pieces of glasses with low thermal-expansion coefficient are employed in an air gap etalon to improve high temperature stability. The design and fabrication of the optical fiber F-P etalon is demonstrated in this paper. Experimental results show that the FSR is 100 GHz, the loss is 3dB and the temperature drift is less than 3GHz from 0 to70℃. Compared with the devices made by traditional methods, the present one is more stable and free of large variation of the refractive index and the thermal expansion.This thesis is divided into 5 parts as follows. The first part is the introduction of the F-P etalons, including the history, background, specification, application and development status of the F-P etalon, and it points out the current problems of the etalon, as well as the key technical issues of this article. The second part, which is the theory part, mainly discusses the theory of multi-beam interference and F-P interferometer. The third part shows the analysis of the coupling loss and introduces the experiments of measuring the factors affecting the coupling efficiency and discusses the problems should be avoided when using the five-dimensional tuning technique to align the light. The forth part explains the classifications and technical specifications(FSR, F, Wavelength Shift) of the F-P etalons in details. The fifth part puts forward the whole design and fabrications of the fiber F-P etalon. Design the experiments, select the main parameters, set up the optical systems and align the light, finally assembly the whole system.Currently F-P etalon have lots of engineering applications, such as the field of high precision testing and analysis instruments, it will have broader applications in the future.
