21st century is a period which the persons closely connected with the world through theinformation network. With the explosive growth of the Internet in these years, opticalcommunication technology has been making significant progress toward of high-capacityall-optical network on-chip. The computing speed of Silicon-silica planar lightwave circuittechnology (PLC) is much higher than electronic integrated circuits. Silicon has uniqueadvantages as traditional medium for communications. There has been a recent trend toachieve optical transmission, optical detection, optical interconnects, light-induced on ahigh-density integrated chip. Here we aim to change that by introducing a ‘flat-fiber’ process that combines theadvantages of existing low-cost fiber drawing with the functionality of planar lightwavecircuits in a novel hybrid format. The flat fiber is similar to planar waveguide, especially thestructure of the device can be made into a variety of functions. Compared with slabwaveguide, flat fiber has the advantage that it not only has the general characteristics oftraditional optical fiber can be long-distance transmission, low loss, mechanical flexibility, easy to save. The biggest benefit is that combining the best aspects of long-range interactionswith parallel analytical point-measurements in an extended array could open uniqueopportunities for both integrated optics and distributed fiber sensing.I have made a systematic analysis with the theoretical models and performanceparameters of flat fiber. Finally, several device designs based on this technology wereproposed in this article. The stimulation are achieved by BPM in order to gain itscharacteristics and all results are demonstrated. The main tasks contain:1. The structure of flat-core optical fiber will be designed and analyzed. I will make acalculation of bending loss and mode characteristics to improve the optimization. I havecalculated the transmission mode field characteristics and the effective refractive index byusing Comsol for modeling the flat fiber.2. Several models of flat fiber functional device have been presented and discussed. The flatfiber design and integration characteristics of the device were calculated strictly based onBeam Propagation Method (BPM).
