With the rapid popularization and development of the network, the need of information is showing explosive growth. Faced with increasingly requirements of transmission capacity and speed, the conventional single mode optical fiber have been unable to meet current needs. Therefore, multiplexing multi-core optical fiber based on space division will become a trend in the development of optical fiber communication.In this paper, beam propagation method and finite element method devised a seven-core optical fiber, structural parameter optimization based on the preparation of the corresponding seven-core optical fiber. In order to study the transmission characteristics of the fiber, the way of butt-coupled was been carried out systematically. The seven-core optical fiber’s transmission loss is 0.36 dB / km, bending loss 0.0537 dB, crosstalk-18.5dB which provides suggests for future applications of multi-core optical fiber.In order to improve the coupling efficiency of multi-core fiber and single core fiber, considering the special structure of the seven-core optical fiber, lens coupling device was been designed through ZEMAX. The coupling device can meet the requirements of detecting and using to multi-core optical fiber’s multiple core diameters simultaneously, and the maximum coupling efficiency is 92.7%. That provides the appropriate support for multi-core optical fiber entering a practical stage of the field as soon as possible.By further understanding of the multi-core fiber, a micro-bending pressure sensor based on multi-core fiber was been designed which is small size, light weight, strong anti-electromagnetic. It not only can detect the pressure of fixed direction, but be able to sense the direction of the pressure, expanding the applications of multi-core.
