Optical fiber is one kind of widely used optical waveguide, its development has been payed extensive attention by domestic and international scholars. With the deepening research work on optical fiber and the increasing investment in optical fiber technology, fiber products have been widely used in communications, medicals, military and other important areas. With the rapid development of fiber optic sensor technology and integrated optics, many new types special optical fibers are starting to emerge, and these special optical fibers are widely used in producing high integrated optical fiber devices and high sensitive optical fiber sensors. This subject analyzes optical properties of several special fibers, which are widely used at present. By summing up the characteristic of various fiber structures, put forward a new structure of special optical fiber-ribbon multi-core optical fiber.The cross-section of ribbon multi-core optical fiber is rectangular, the thickness of the cladding is thinner and there are multiple cores distributed in it. Special fiber structure makes it easy to be fixed on the measured flat or object surface without torsion. The thinner cladding structure makes ribbon multi-core optical fiber have a certain polarization characteristics and a strong evanescent field. We can apply ribbon multi-core optical fiber produce a variety of fiber optic devices and sensors. The ribbon multi-core optical fiber preform is spliced by several quartz components, and the control of structural parameters is more flexible. We can obtain ribbon multi-core optical fiber with different optical properties by adjusting the location and distribution mode of fiber core. The excellent optical performance and the regular appearance structure make the ribbon multi-core optical fiber possess more application fields.This subject gives several typical ribbon multi-core optical fiber structures, analyzes the application about these types of ribbon multi-core optical fiber in the production of fiber optic devices and fiber optic sensor. And introduce the production methods of ribbon multi-core optical fiber, including the production of MCVD optical fiber preform, the processing technology of optical fiber preform and the drawing process of ribbon multi-core fiber. Then analyze the optical transmission characteristics of ribbon multi-core optical fiber, including the polarization properties of ribbon multi-core optical fiber, the energy coupling of multiple cores and the impact of coated metal on light wave. Test the parameters of ribbon multi-core optical fiber in the experiment, such as the geometry, numerical aperture, loss and polarization characteristics parameters etc.This subject uses the finite element software to analyze the birefringence of ribbon multi-core optical fiber, We can obtain birefringence at the magnitude of 10-5 by optimizing the structure parameters of ribbon multi-core optical fiber; Using beamprop software to analyze the coupling between cores of ribbon multi-core optical fiber; by coating metal on the surface of ribbon multi-core optical fiber to impact the loss and the polarization properties of ribbon multi-core optical fiber.
