Combustion characteristic test must be carried out before a lot of materials and products are brought into the market. The flame size is a very important indicators in the process of combustion characteristic test and has important reference value on combustion characteristic evaluation and security determination of burning flammable.In this paper, a real-time flame size measurement system is designed based on virtual instrument and visual inspection technology, the hardware and software of the system are designed in detail, and the actual experiment are also carried out.The paper built hardware platform according to the design requirements for the flame size measurement. Hardware platform is mainly composed of USB industrial camera, lighting,and other components of the computer to real-time acquisition of the main flame image.Flame image preprocessing methods are researched in detail which mainly include the access to the target area, denoising, threshold segmentation, morphology processing, edge detection.The paper researches and realizes appropriate processing algorithm according to concrete experiment results, median filter is used for denoising processing, the threshold value for image segmentation is confirmed based on image gray histogram, flame image is processed with morphology processing and take edge detection by Sobel operator, flame edge pixel size on the horizontal direction and vertical direction are obtained by pixel size measuring tool, dot calibration diagram is used for system calibration to get the relationship between the pixel values and actual size conversion, to finally realizes the real-time measurement of flame size.This paper mainly takes the candle flame as a laboratory specific research object, designs experimental schemes and analyzes the experiment data and error sources. Experiment results data show that the flame size measuring system designed in this paper can realize real-time online measurement of flame size. The system works with stability, high precision and has certain guiding significance for different kinds of flame size measurement and system application.
