Effective demining is a worldwide problem. Infrared technology is a promising technology in landmine detection. Infrared thermal imaging uses the radiation of target to acquire the target image, working in the two atmospheric windows 3~5μm and 8~14μm. Infrared thermal imaging can penetrate smoke, fog and camouflage. It can be applied in all-weather and long distance. Infrared detector is a key technique of infrared imaging. With the improvement of the performance and the fabrication process of infrared detector, the fast development of infrared imaging detection has a higher spatial resolution and temperature resolution. The characteristics of IR imaging, the development of infrared detector and modern image processing provide the possibility for infrared thermal imaging landmine detection.In this paper, infrared thermal imaging detection based on the radiation difference of buried object and the background uses high-resolution infrared camera for infrared imaging detection. Target feature can be extracted by image processing for further analysis. It makes data processing and analysis on the different influencing factors for thermal contrast. The geometric characteristic of landmine is verified by the feature extraction. The main contents of this paper include:(1)The necessity of landmine detection is proposed. Different methods of landmine detection are described. The main related technology of infrared detection and the development of infrared imaging landmine detection at home and abroad are present ed. Study on the influencing factors of the different radiation of heat between target and background. The infrared thermal imaging system on landmine detection is constructed.(2)On the basis of analysis of influence factors, a thermal model of landmine detection is proposed. The initial conditions and boundary conditions of the thermal model are discussed. A numerical algorithm is suggested for solving the thermal model. The simulation of thermal model and the normalization data of actual detection are co mpared, and the calculation of correlation coefficient are verified the feasibility of the thermal model.(3)Infrared imaging system of landmine detection was set up. The mine field was set for infrared imaging. The change of temperature difference and different factors that affect temperature distribution are discussed. The characteristics of infrared image are discussed. The image processing for mine field detection is studied. C-V model and morphologic edge detection are used and get significant geometric characteristics. The circularity is taken as description parameter.
