This paper describes the design of ultra-wideband ground penetrating radar(GPR) antenna which is applied to the GPR system. In recent years, ground penetrating radar is commonly applied to many fields which can be used to detect ground conditions and mineral resources as well as to detect underground tunnels. Ground penetrating radar uses the electromagnetic waves to detect underground conditions. The transmitting and receiving antennas are used to transmit and receive electromagnetic waves respectively. It is possible to obtain the situation of underground environment by analyzing and processing the received signal. Therefore, the antenna is very important for ground penetrating radar systems. The research and design of ultra-wideband ground penetrating radar antenna in this article has a positive effect on the development of ground penetrating radar system.Firstly, this paper introduces the research background of GPR and the types of the ground penetrating radar antenna. Then the theoretical knowledge of antenna is introduced which provides a theoretical basis for the design of the GPR antenna. Two directional antennas are designed by combining theoretical knowledge and the case of GPR antenna designed before. The dipole or monopole directional receiving antenna is suitable for the pulse GPR system, so the monopole and dipole receiving antenna are designed in this paper. This paper provides the solutions for the problem of the antenna directional radiation and the all-around detection of underground environment information. The solution of this paper is to add an arc metal plate on the back of the antenna to make the antenna directional radiate, and then use the method of loading medium to reduce the size of the antenna. The all-around detection of ground penetrating radar is realized by using three antennas with three arc metal plate in the same horizontal plane. The performance of the antenna can be improved by the method of Wu-king loading, RC loading and so on. The model of the antenna is optimized by the electromagnetic simulation software CST, which can solve the problem of the time domain waveform distortion caused by the coupling of the antenna radiation. Finally, the appropriate antenna model is determined. Two directional receiving antennas are designed in this paper, which have a small size and a good performance in the inhibition of tailing signal compared with the previous GPR antenna. The antenna system becomes simplified and miniaturized as the arrangement of the traditional single directional antenna is changed.
