In December 2013, the IEEE committee issued the IEEE 802.11ac protocol standard, and now the standard has been developed into the mainstream in Wireless local area network. In recent years, the research of IEEE 802.11ac is also in development. In these research, we inevitably have to use all kinds of simulation software. The most popular simulation softwares in the world include OPNET which is expensive but professional and NS-2 which is free and open-source.Although the NS-2 has been developed maturely, but it is hard to meet the wireless communication technology’s support for mobility. So that the Washington University put forward NS-3 to replace the NS-2. But at present, NS-3 has not been developed well in domestic. Many universities, individuals and institutions are still limited to use NS-2.In order to research and promote NS-3, and support the IEEE 802.11ac protocol on the NS-3, this article will modify the source code of NS-3 and simulate the 802.11ac.Firstly,this article introduces the related background and the research situation of IEEE 802.11ac and NS-3, and some related basic concepts in this article. This paper mainly introduces the differences between IEEE 802.11ac and IEEE 802.11n in PHY and MAC layers, including the channel bandwidth, modulation coding, frame aggregation, etc., which provides a theoretical basis for the improvement of NS-3.Secondly, the structure and components of the NS-3 are introduced in detail. And according to the actual situation of NS-3, it is pointed out that the NS-3 source code should be modified in several aspects. In the modification process, this article introduces the changes of source code in PHY layer and the MAC layer, so as to realize the support of 802.11 ac in NS-3.At the end of this paper, the modified NS-3 is used to test the performance of IEEE 802.11ac protocol, and the calculation process of the theoretical results and the NS-3 debugging process of the simulation are described in detail. Simulation results show that the modification of NS-3 source code is correct, but also proved that the NS-3’s structure is rigorous and detailed and the calculation is accurate, but the development is not yet mature.
