Optical modulator which combines high-speed, long-distance and other advantages into one integrated optical devices plays a crucial role in the optical fiber communication system. Currently, the study of the optical modulator has made a great progress, not only the performance of the modulator has been improved, but also the speed, bandwidth and integration density have been significantly enhanced. However, the demands of higher performance modulator rapidly grow with the development of optical communication technology. As a result, the material and structure used for fabricating the device need further innovation.Graphene, as a new type of two-dimensional material has attractive much interest world widely since it emerged, due to its unique structure and optical-electrical properties. Waveguide made of graphene whose propagation constant is anisotropic has distinctive properties contributed by different internal energy states. Graphene has an absorbtion enhancement effect on the light transmitted on D-shaped fiber waveguide surface, which depends strongly on the polarized state of the transmitted light. Graphene can be combined together with D-shaped fiber easily utilizing wet transfer technology, which makes it possible to study the optical property and implementation of new device based on graphene-D-shaped -fiber.First, a new method of transfering the graphene film produced by chemical sedimentation onto the D-shaped fiber surface has been proposed in this work.in order to boost the interaction between the graphene film and the transmitted light. The transmittion property of the waveguide structure mentioned above is investigated in theory and the distribution of guiding mode is calculated by simulation after the preparation of high optical quality D-shaped fiber which is coated with graphene film.Secondly, in this work, the preparation technology of graphene films and the polish methods of polishing D-shaped fiber have been discussed in detail.And it provides insights for the production process of GDF.Finally, GDF hybrid waveguide structure applications have been carried out, such as GDF polarization dependence of absorption saturation measurement and simulation, GDF polarization selective measurement and the experiments of multimode GDF gas sensing.Throughout the experiments, we have verified the polarization control characteristics of the GDF and the effectiveness of its modulation applications.
