Lin Baishui, a famous journalist in the period of the Republic of China, who was killed by warlords because of his literary works, devoted his whole life to journalism. His report was full of criticism,radicalism and sharp opinion, even went to the length of unkindness.This study has chosen Lin Baishui’s news comment of as the object of study to explore and analyze the extremeness of his public criticism. through the Lin case. This study divided Lin Baishui’s activity to three stages as "period of celebrities", "politicians period" and "journalists period", to conduct text researching and word frequency analysis. Lin Baishui’s extremeness on public criticism performed as:first, intervening consciousness on government affairs openness; second, advocating consciousness on racial revolution. Lin Baishui’s extremeness on practical activity:first,provocative language, straightforward words; second, personal attacks by naming names.To discuss the source of Lin Baishui’s extreme public opinion criticism,this paper has also analyzed his personal background and the background of the times:chivalrous character, traditional family, open education; turbulent times, open and critical public opinion environmentBy analyzing his way of news comment,this study tried to enlighten the contemporary journalists on their pursuit and realization of "criticism" that,journalists should have criticized correctly, should be more profound understanding and mastering the border of the freedom of speech.To do public criticism better,journalists should master the degree of professional ethics scale, standard legal scale, social morality scale, taking extreme expression as a forbidden zone, none of caustic, malicious criticism and wanton insult is allowed.
