Promotional film, as an external communication carrier, plays an important role to improve urban soft power. Ethnic minority areas of our country have a strong ethnic characteristics. Their historical resources, cultural resources and natural resources are very rich. Promotional film, which provide a vivid expression for the city image promotion, attracts a lot of people.Inner Mongolia and Yunnan located on the north island and south island are all at the frontier in China. Their national characteristic is distinct.In this paper, the Inner Mongolia and Yunnan promotional films, a total of 80 units, were analyzed, using the method of analysis of the text, data statistical analysis and comparative analysis. Based on these works, the paper sums up the characteristics of the promotional film, the similarities and differences. According to the economic and social development of Inner Mongolia and Yunnan, this paper provides some suggestion for the external communication of region image of the two regions in the promotional films.Through a deep analysis of 80 samples involving Inner Mongolia and Yunnan promotional films, the author thinks that the Promotional films are grand and beautiful and reflected the rich characteristics of the region. But, to same degree, the same expression weakened the best effect of image communication of the ethnic minority areas. Finally, the paper thinks modern concept, various content and united communication platform will be the way for the development of the ethnic minority areas promotional films.
