Yan’an And Chongqing:The Comparison On Political Mobilization Between The Jiefang Daily And The Xinhua Daily (1942-1945)

The Jiefang Daily in Yan’an and the Xinhua Daily in Chongqing are two landmarks in the history of Chinese Communist Party newspapers. They played important roles in 1940s. After the year of 1949, mode of the Jiefang Daily is used by party newspapers more often, but in general, these two newspapers embodied the experience of rural party newspaper and urban party newspaper. They also provided future references for party newspapers in some degree.Even the Jiefang Daily and the Xinhua Daily are both party newspapers, they showed some differences. These two modes were caused from different regional environment which lead to the differences between rural newspaper and urban newspaper, the Liberated Area newspaper and the KMT-controlled area newspaper. As party newspapers, they took the task of political mobilization. So, the different political mobilization strategies reflected the differences on newspapers’ modes and strategies. This paper chooses the mobilization on the Anti-Japanese War, the Great Production Movement and the working class as subjects to analyze and summarize the factors of regional environment which lead to different mobilization strategies.This paper concentrates on the differences on the political mobilization between the Jiefang Daily in Yan’an and the Xinhua Daily in Chongqing. The paper also concentrates on the different media environment which leads to the different mobilization strategies. In fact, the differences of mobilization showed the two modes of the party newspapers. So, this paper analyzes and summarizes two-modes ofnewspaperin Yan an and newspaper in Chongqing, and explores their historical values to provide inspiration for the current party newspapers.The Chapter One analyzes the media environment and roles of the Jiefang Daily and the Xinhua Daily. The media environment of Yan’an and Chongqing were different, including politics, economy, culture, media, and so on. They were the differences between rural and urban area, and also between the political status in the Liberated Area and the KMT-controlled area. Different political environment, economic levels, material resources and education of residents leaded to distinct media environment and roles the newspapers play.The Chapter Two compares mobilization on the Anti-Japanese War of the Jiefang Daily and the Xinhua Daily. The Jiefang Daily and the Xinhua Daily both concentrated on the mobilization of the Anti-Japanese War, but the ways of mobilization were distinct. The Jiafang Daily in Yan’an criticized the Kuomintang’s wartime policies, shaped public opinion as a teacher and showed the theme of the Anti-Japanese War with vivid and concise literary style. Meanwhile, in the Chongqing city, the Xinhua Daily concentrated on the united front of the Anti-Japanese War, expressed viewpoints from readers to mobilize.The Chapter Three concentrates on the Great Production Movement mobilization. In addition to the mobilization of the Anti-Japanese War, the Jiefang Daily also concentrated on the mobilization of the production movement. The production movement related to the economic environment of Yan’an. It also implied the political objectives. Based on the local environment, the Jiafang Daily focused on the daily life in rural areas, aroused the enthusiasm of production, published the papers which fit on local culture well and followed the policies to achieve a good effect of mobilization.The Chapter Four concentrates on the mobilization on the working class. In Chongqing city, workers were important social forces and main readers of the Xinhua Daily. So, the Xinhua Daily concentrated on the mobilization of workers. Under the flag of the Anti-Japanese War, the Xinhua Daily united the workers, reflected the workers life, helped them to fight for rights and published their articles. The strategies also fit on the local environment of Chongqing city well.The Chapter Five summarizes the differences of political mobilization between the Jiefang Daily and the Xinhua Daily which caused by the different regional environment. Factors of regional environment are summarized to two dimensions on rural newspaper and the urban newspaper, the Liberated Area newspaper and the KMT-controlled area newspaperIn general, the Jiafang Daily and the Xinhua Daily were two important explorations of the party newspaper. They represented two modes of the rural party newspaper and urban party newspaper. The experience of two newspapers provided inspiration for party newspapers later and nowadays. Meanwhile, in modern society, we also need to consider how to inherit the traditional modes of the party newspapers properly.
