Applications concentrated on information sharing, such as online video, file sharing, have become the mainstream of today’s networking applications. Therefore, the efficient information delivery has become the main purpose in the future network, which results in the booming research in the information-centric networks. Among the many information-centric network projects, NDN uses a URL-like, semantic and layered naming method, as well as an efficient routing forwarding mechanism, and thus gains more widespread attention. The NDN achieves efficiently the separation of the naming and the location, multicast, network security and load balancing, which cannot be well solved in the existing networks. NDN provides an excellent alternative for the future network architecture. This paper analyses the structures, techniques and routing scalability problems of NDN in detail. Three aspects are suggested which can increase the routing scalability of NDN, including preventing the expansion of the routing table entries, improving searching and updating speed in the tables, as well as reducing the frequency of looking up the tables with the cache. By analysis and comparison, the paper focuses on and proposes a method which can prevent the expansion of the routing table entries. The DHT is used for splitting the routing table entries in the NDN core node, which enables NDN to obtain better routing scalability. The proposed method can also balance the distribution of the routing table entries and obtain a higher degree of convergence in the core nodes. The proposed method is implemented in the NS3 simulation environment. By using the NdnSIM tool, distributed NDN node modules are realized. Simulation results show that the proposed method can achieve a good routing scalability.
