Satellite communications play an important role in wireless information transmission because of their wide coverage, good ability to broadcast, no restriction by geographical conditions and so on. With growing demand for broadband multimedia services and bulk exchange, new generation broadband satellite network characterized by high speed information transmission has become mainstream in the development of satellite communications.The main works of this thesis are in what follows:first, we introduce domestic and foreign trend for the on-board switching technology of the satellite communication system, study on performance and adaptability of the satellite packet switching and circuit switching, design a hybrid packet circuit switching system, and demonstrate its legitimacy through the project. Moreover, to ensure efficient data forwarding, we design a pipeline method to process data and use a shared cache mode to store data.Based on the obtained results, we divide the functions of the switchboard and propose a prototype system of on-board switch. It puts the emphases on the interface realization to exchange data between the network layer and the physical layer. The on-board switch functions are divided into modules of input-processing, accepting-scheduling, traffic-classification, queue-management, transmission-control, output-processing, flow-control. These modules have been designed and implemented using hardware description language.In the end of this thesis, concluding remarks and future research works in the related research fields are involved.
