With the development of the intelligent terminal and mobile Internet application, the demand for high speed access to the Internet via mobile phone is growing rapidly. Although the 3G network has already a relatively high speed, facing with higher requirements for bandwidth, the 4G network with much higher speed can meet customers’ demand better. The 3GPP thus proposed the long term evolution (LTE) and the system architecture evolution (SAE), and both of them formed the evolved packet system (EPS). The EPS can support broadband mobile business better and ensure the long-term development of the mobile network in the future.Supported by the National High-Tech Development Project(863 project), the test and simulation of next generation converged satellite and terrestrial broadband communication networks, this dissertation has performed a relatively comprehensive simulation on both the 4G LTE network and the converged satellite & terrestrial networks based on LTE by using NS-3.This dissertation first introduces the satellite communication system, the architecture of LTE mobile communication system on earth and its protocol stack. It also outlines the converged satellite and terrestrial networks which consist of the LTE moblie communication system on earth and the satellite communication system. Then, by using NS-3, this dissertation has performed the design and implementation of the LTE network on earth, and the converged satellite and terrestrial networks based on LTE simulation modules. Such a implementation includes the analysis of the data communication process, the construction of network modules and simulation environment, and the detailed realization of each module. Finally, we configure different simulation scenarios, such as different packet sending intervals, distance between UE and eNodeB, number of UEs attaching to one eNodeB. We have evaluated the performance of the networks constructed in this dissertation, including the UE output throughput, the ratio of packet loss and delay. The main contribution of this dissertation can be summarized as follows:(1) Current academic work on the 4G network simulation study is mainly focusing on evaluating the performance of wireless link, but the performance evaluation of the entire backbone network(such as EPC) could be rare. By using NS-3, this dissertation has performed a relatively comprehensive simulation on LTE network, that is, the EPS(Evolved Packet System) simulation module which consists of LTE and EPC is simulated.(2) In reference to the 3G achievements of foreign countries, this dissertation has realized a simulation of an architecture for the converged satellite and terrestrial networks based on LTE and made it preliminary simulated.(3) This dissertation has analyzed the results via NS-3 for the LTE network on earth and the converged satellite and terrestrial networks based on LTE. In this simulation we have studied the network performance of the UE output throughput, the ratio of packet loss and delay under different simulation scenarios, such as different packet sending intervals, distance between UE and eNodeB, number of UEs attaching to one eNodeB.
