Realism is the key pursuit of many CG movies and animation, and realistic material is one of the most important component of the realistic rendering. Material models embody the color, transparency, roughness properties of objects, and over the years many complex models have been developed to describe the complex optical properties of real-life objects. One major problem is that different modeling software and Tenderers adopt different material models and their implementations are often proprietary, making it difficult, if not impossible, to share material designs among different software. The goal of this thesis is to develop a platform that allows material designs to be easily shared among different software. For that purpose, we established a multi-host material translation system that is able to translate Mental-Ray, V-Ray, Yeti, Shave materials into RenderAnts materials, on both Autodesk Maya and 3ds Max.In this thesis, we first introduce the design of the material translation system and then discuss the features and implementations of different components of the system. We also demonstrate that the system can be easily extended to support sharing of hair geometry and material data. In addition, we developed a material optimization system that automatically matches the output material parameters with the input without knowing the implementation details of the input material model.
