In the 21 st century, with the rapid development of mobile communication and embedded technology, fields like communication, security, internet of things and other applications are becoming more and more dependent upon embedded system. Moreover, as the application is an important element of the embedded system, its function and performance have been improved magnificently at the meantime. Embedded system has many incredible advantages, such as low power consumption, high reliability, richly featured, high performance cost ratio, real-time capacity, high efficiency,and low cost, which lead embedded system affect people’s life from different aspects.The embedded equipment mentioned in this paper is designed to implement real-time transmission of multimedia data. In view of the 3G network and WiFi network, both of them have its own feature. 3G network is mobile, wide-area covered, but the transmission rate is slightly lower, and the expense is higher comparing with WiFi network. WiFi network has higher transmission rate, lower fee, wide-coverage area. So as a conclusion, it is beneficial when 3G and WiFi networks are combined together. In this paper, the designed embedded device is individual soldier which means that it can only use one of the 3G and WiFi networks to access and transmit at once. The key elements needed in this paper are listed as follows:(1) Analyze business needs of the embedded real-time network transmission terminal. Then, based on the analysis results, select hardware processor, 3G module and WiFi module. In this paper, I choose the TMS320DM365 TI as the main chip, U6100 module as the 3G module, RT5370 module as the WiFi module; and then I propose the system framework, and design the software and hardware framework, respectively.(2) Considering both of 3G and WiFi are used in embedded device, I first introduce the register of 3G system, the configuration of data link layer based on PPP protocol, then comes to the configuration and connection of WiFi. Also, I propose and design a self-adaption switching strategy between 3G and WiFi.(3) In consider of the business requirements in ’smart highway’, I design and accomplish: a work order module which is based on UDP protocol and transmits through Socket, a file transmission module which is based on FTP protocol, a video data transmission module and a voice data transmission module which are based on RTP protocol. In this paper, I also introduce amethod to avoid the jam might occur during the internet transmission process.The embedded application module hereunder mentioned has been testified, and the performance of every function has been realized as expected.
