Magnetorheological finishing, combined with the magnetic field, fluid technology, chemical polishing technology, is an ideal processing method for aspherical and ultra-smooth surface. MRF has been successfully applied to a wide range of optical materials such as optical glass, optical crystal, optical plastic and other materials, with high process precision, no tool wear and subsurface damage. In this paper, a control system on surface contact MRF machine developed by Xi’an Technological University is designed.Analysizing the ring-contact MRF machine principle, structure and technological requirements, an equipment control scheme works out. The system with the core of PLC, including motion control systems, institutional adjustment system and alarm system, can achieve data collection, input and output control, process control, and touch screen in the system, as a man-machine interface, is simple and straight. It meets the requirements of manual and automatical controls. On the analysis of I/O ports and control tasks of the system, the PLC, expansion modules and other devices are chosen. Then the overall structure of control system and hardware circuits is designed.Based on task analysis, the overall software scheme is given, and the main program and subroutines are designed. According to display and input requirements and their switching functions, the programs of touch panel interfaces are given, which can meet many operational requests, such as MRF machine monitoring and parameter modification, etc. Finally, by the success connection of hardware and software of the control system and online debugging, the whole control system is stable and reliable, and the design can meet the control requirements. From the process experiments, the control system was verified to meet the process requirements. The experiment results show that the MRF machine can polish optical components with the maximum diameter of 300mm, the radius no less 30mm, and the surface roughness less tha 1nm.
