Road side trees are a landscape-relatedly, environmentally, ecologically and socially important constituent of modern cities. While in a single city study, local status should be mainly taken into account as precondition. Taiyuan is a state-certified city on urban greening, especially on road side trees planting for there has been great efforts being paid among recent decade. Yet there still be immense space to make step forward. To achieve it,2 urgent issues needed to be considered——one is the problem caused by the amount of data created from the spatial distribution, numbers of species and frequent updating of road side trees, which have made the data management a tough job; And the other one is the lack of systematical analysis on road side trees structure and roads’condition, which can be an instructive guide for road side trees planning.Based consideration-above, this study began with stratified sampling investigation, detailed survey and resources collecting, by which way the data was accumulated, which has set a firm base of the main body of this research that covered 2 topics, one is the building of a Database system used for road side trees data management, and the other one is the analysis of the structure of the road side trees in Taiyuan.(1) The database system is formed from a Web front and a background server. In the Web front, the Bootstrap structure was employed, and by connecting the JavaScript API for Highmoralmap, user interface was developed; the background server was conFig.ured in the environment provided by the WAMP, a software allowing people to conduct PHP+ MySQL+Apache structure on the Windows platform. This Database system has realized the functions like data inputting and modifying, roads and streets positioning, data spatial query, detailed query, statistic analysis, and disease and pest query. To some extent this Database system has achieved the goal of efficient management for road side trees data, but there are chances to be found to make improvement in a wider field like urban landscaping data management.(2) When it came to structure analysis, the multi-scale method was employed in this research——3 scales including the whole city scale, the district scale and the main road or street scale have been set to study the structureof road side trees in Taiyuan.1) Among the road side trees in Taiyuan, Arbors can be classified into62 species, belonging to 24 families and 39 genera, and it was the growing ability but not the landscape utility that is put into the first place when planning. Sophora japonica is the highest arbor species both in abundance and frequency, and Leguminosae and Salicaceae are the most commonly used families, which has led the unreasonableness of arbors’structure. Shrubs can be classified into 24 species, belonging to 8 families and 16 genera, and are well-distributed and vastly contribute to street ornamentation, while the amount of population of which is rather so small that leads to monotony in landscape.2) There are significant gaps among the 6 districts. Tmgze District, Xinghualing District, Xiaodian District and Wanbailin District are all excellent both in species diversity and abundance, and except Wanbailin District, their planting and maintenance were promptly and nearly perfectly done, while Jiancaoping District and Jinyuan District are still Fig.hting with the lower level of urban greening. However, the common problem of the 6 districts is the lack of evergreen species.3) The 6 main roads and streets studied in this research are the represents of high level road side trees planting as they all have high value in species diversity and have got formed many different vertical stratifications, among which the "Arbor+Ground Cover Plant" and "Arbor+Flowering Shrub+Ground Cover Plant" modes are the most commonly to see. As the service function of the 6 main streets and roads are totally different, there would be much differences in growth vigor and vertical stratification of the trees in different roads or streets. Roads and streets mainly used for intercity or urban-rural transportation trend to use trees with strong growth vigor and vertical stratification with simple modes, while the roads and streets across city center prefer the adverse way.
