In view of the shortage and serious pollution situation of water resource, a real-time water quality monitoring way is necessary to find to perfect the general method. This paper expounds the advantages and challenges of wireless sensor network technology applied in water quality monitoring, and carry out several key research of the application. The research contents are mainly around the basic object of wireless sensor network nodes, including nodes design and nodes deployment. Main work shows as follows:(1) Starting from the main purpose of water quality monitoring system, this paper firstly analyze the function requirements of system, and then design a general framework of the monitoring system. The node’s design is in accordance to the national water environment quality standards. Only three water quality parameters are considered in the design. The detail design of hardware and software are also described in the following contents, including the detailed design of all hardware modules, the selection of sensors, the detailed analysis and design of signal conditioning circuit; and the software of data gathering node and software of data acquiring in OSCL operating systems. The paper then does some testing experiment of the hand-made nodes, including test the communication capability of the nodes and data accuracy of water quality parameters, etc. The test results show that the nodes can effectively collect the water quality parameters, and transfer them though the wireless sensor network to PC.(2) In terms of node deployment, the paper first divides the current deployment strategy into two-dimensional three-dimensional deployment, and points out that the three-dimensional deployment is the future research direction. Then in order to solve the inequality energy consumption problems on sparse deployment in the three layers structure model of UWSN, an asymmetric simple cubic lattice structure construction algorithm is proposed. The analysis and simulation from network lifetime and energy consumption for this algorithm is discussed. The results show that the algorithm can not only guarantee the coverage requirements and control the density of nodes, but also balance the nodes’ energy consumption and prolong the network lifetime.
