Since the invention of the first photonic crystal fiber(PCF) in 1996, PCFs have attracted great attention of the researchers because of their excellent performance. The PCFs with high birefringence and zero dispersion have wide applications in the field of communication and sensing system. Compared with the beam splitter based on conventional optical fiber, the polarization beam splitter based on PCFs can provide better extinction ratio and coupling length. In this paper, two novel kinds of polarization beam splitters based on PCFs with high birefringence and zero dispersion have been proposed. The transmission characteristics of the PCFs are analyzed by finite element method. The main contents of this dissertation are as follows:Firstly, combining with the concept and development status of PCFs, the applications of the PCFs in communication technology, lasers, filters, sensors and other aspects are analyzed and summarized, the advantages and disadvantages of PCFs with different matrix materials are also compared.Secondly, based on Maxwell’s Equations, several typical parameters of the PCFs are introduced and the coupled-mode equations of the PCFs are derived, the advantages and disadvantages of the common methods are also analyzed when we numerically simulate the mode characteristics of the PCFs.Finally, two kinds of PCFs with simple structures, high birefringence and zero dispersion in communication band and good performance of polarization beam. One uses quartz glass as background material, the air holes are triangular arrangement. This PCF has good characteristics of birefringence, dispersion and polarization beam at the wavelength of 1310 nm. The other one uses tellurium glass as polarization beam, the air holes are arranged in a rectangular shape. This PCF has good characteristics of birefringence, dispersion and polarization beam at the wavelength of 1550 nm.The PCFs designed in this paper have simple structures and have good performance in many ways at the same time, can be used in communication systems, polarization system as well as the optical devices, such as lasers, polarization beam splitters and so on. Because of these wide applications range, the PCFs designed in this paper will have good prospects.
