The metal wire filled photonic crystal fiber (PCF) is a new type of optical fiber,which is developed with the improvement of the PCF drawing levels. This type of fibercombinestheadvantagesofthetraditionalPCFandmetalwirewaveguide. Anditsuniqueoptical characteristics can be hardly achieved in the conventional pure media fiber. In thisdissertation, the basic characteristics of the metal wire filled highly birefringence PCF(HB-PCF) are investigated by the finite element method (FEM). And its applications inthe fiber based polarization filter devices are also discussed. The main contents of thisdissertation are as follows:Firstly, based on the development of the PCF, the research progress of the plasma-based PCF is elaborated. Several useful methods for numerical simulations are described.Analysis of the main parameters to describe the optical transmission of the fiber is alsodemonstrated.Secondly, starting from the Maxwell’s equations, theory of the metal wire filled PCFis introduced. As the fundamental analysis model, the conventional hexagonal structurefiber is chosen to demonstrate the principle of optical transmission of the metal wire filledPCF.Again, impact of the metal wires to the HB-PCF is discussed. Characteristics ofPCF filling with several metal wires are investigated when there is no surface plasmonpolariton (SPP) supermode formed. A PCF with good filter properties in communicationwavelength is designed.Finally, the factors affecting fiber polarization characteristics are studied, such asthe intensity of fiber birefringence, the proportion of air filling, and the size of the metalwires. Two fibers which can realize well polarization splitting filter function at1.55μmand1.31μm are designed successfully in the end.Studiesshowthatgoodfiltercharacteristicsattherequiredwavelengthcanbeachievedbyselectivelyfillingoneormoremetalwireswithsuitablesizeandlocationinthecladdingof PCF. Moreover, using the high polarized HB-PCF can make it more important in thepolarization dependent optical applications. Overall, the metal wire filled HB-PCF is ofgreat significance for the fiber-based polarization devices and other fiber plasma devices.
