With the progress of the fiber optics and waveguide technology, the ring resonator has been widely used in optical fiber and waveguide system due to its simple structure, small size and high integration. In recent years, as the growing requirement of people towards communication system, communication provider always upgrades their network. In the optical network, reconfigurable filters based on ring resonator is becoming a favorite of the next generation WDM system, because its reconfigurable property can reduce the expense when upgrading the system.Firstly, we introduce and review the research in recent years of the ring resonator and filters based on it. We analyze the basic theory of a single ring resonator and introduce some important indicators of optical filter.Then, we study on a single ring filter by mode coupling theory. We mainly analyze how the structure can influence the transmission and chromatic dispersion. Through this analysis, we choose the appropriate parameters in order to reach the best state of this filter and meet the requirement of indicators. We also design and do the experiment to exam the theoretical results.Finally, we propose a reconfigurable interleaver based on single ring resonator. We demonstrate via numerical analysis that the proposed interleaver can realize its tunability of passband bandwidth by adjust its addition phases on two arms or changing its coupling coefficients of the couplers. Within the tunable range, the interleaver has a high channel isolation and a low chromatic dispersion. Both methods have their own advantages, which can suit different situation respectively.
