Software-defined radio(SDR) can achieve a variety of communication functions of the radio communication system. At first, it was used to solve the radio problems like interconnection, intercommunication and interoperability. Because of its high level of flexibility, extensive attention has been paid in military and civilian fields. However, the waveform of SDR development based on specific hardware platform, results in the poor portability of the waveform application. Fortunately, the software communications architecture(SCA) specification provides a way to address the above problems. Its main purpose is to make sure radio platform universalization, modularization, expandability and make sure waveform portability, reusable and interoperability. In order to solve the poor portability of waveform of the specialized hardware processor, SCA puts forward hardware abstraction layer concept. Besides, DSP has excellent real-time signal processing capabilities, it plays an important role in SDRs. Thus discussing the DSP hardware abstraction layer has the value of practical application. This paper will focus on the study of the DSP hardware abstraction layer.Firstly, the paper describes software defined radio platform of our research group and discusses the design requirements of DSP hardware abstraction layer interface components. For the realization of DSP platform portability of waveform components, the DSP hardware abstraction layer interface components are designed, including ARM to DSP HPI and FPGA to DSP EMIF data communication interface design. Through the test of interface components, we get a conclusion that interface component can provide efficient underlying communication mechanism for DSP hardware abstraction layer.Secondly, the paper analyzes DSP hardware abstraction layer, discusses the importance for the portability of waveform components. Then analyzes DSP hardware abstraction layer functional and performance requirements based on MHAL. According to the needs analysis, the various functional modules include packet encapsulation and analysis module, component registration and routing module, parameter configuration module, data forwarding module and data reader module has been designed, and then discusses their design processes and the key issues. At last, building a test environment, functions and performance of the DSP hardware abstraction layer have been tested.Finally, the paper analyzes the complexity of SCA system development and puts forward the idea of visual integrated development environment of components. Then the visual integrated development environment for DSP components are designed, including DSP device modeling, DSP hardware abstraction layer modeling, DSP waveform component modeling and the contents need to be considered in the modeling process. After the completion of each module modeled, the visual modeling results are analyzed.
