Sensor nodes of the wireless sensor network(WSN) are usually energyconstrained, and They are difficult to be recharged due to the limitation of environmental reasons. Therefore, reducing energy consumption, improving energy saving and increasing energy efficiency become the hot researches in WSN.Under the existing hardware technical conditions, there are two ways to reduce the energy consumption of sensor nodes: changing the way of communication and reducing communication data. Virtual MIMO is an effective energy-saving technology in WSN. Virtual MIMO exploits individual single-antenna nodes to cooperate on information transmission and realizes reliable communication with lower energy consumption. Distributed Source Coding(DSC) compresses the high correlation data of adjacent sensor nodes, which can reduce the length of the transmission data and increase energy efficiency of WSN.The application of virtual MIMO and DSC in WSN are deeply researched in this paper.Firstly, the principles and characteristics of existing virtual MIMO communication strategies are studied and the energy consumption model of virtual MIMO communication is established. On this basis, GCMIMO is proposed in this paper. GCMIMO is a virtual MIMO communication strategy based on collaborative groups. A collaborative group is constituted by two source nodes, which can transmit the data by using virtual MIMO. GCMIMO can optimize the intra-cluster communication because it omits the data collecting process of cluster heads and reduces the forwarding times of source data by using collaborative groups.Secondly, the impacts of DSC in virtual MIMO communication are analyzed. The difficulties of integrating virtual MIMO and DSC with each other are summarized. On this basis, a new communication strategy, called DSC-MIMO, is proposed in this paper. DSC-MIMO integrates the symmetrical DSC based on Low Density Parity-Check(LDPC) code and GCMIMO. DSC-MIMO compresses high correlation data of the source nodes in collaborative groups by using DSC, which can reduce the length of the data in intra- cluster communication and inter- cluster communication. Finally, a Matlab simulation platform is established for simulating energy consumption of GCMIMO and DSC-MIMO. The results of simulations show that GCMIMO and DSC-MIMO can reduce the energy consumption of WSN, and have a good energy saving effect.
