Wireless sensor network, WSN is a new wireless network which integrates sensor, embedded computing, networking and wireless communication technology to gather and process information. Contrast to other wireless networks, the nodes in WSN is power-limitted, thus, the infomation process performance and the communicatin capacity is greatly affected. To overcome such constraints, a low power-consuming communication protocol or algorithm is needed. Using Distributed Source Coding, DSC during information encoding is one of the effective ways to solve the problem. DSC reduces the transmitted rate by indepently encoding information using the correlation of sources, and improve the overall effectiveness of the whole transmit process by joint decoding. As one of the key technology in WSN information transmisson, the research on DSC is getting more and more muture, and the application of DSC is also expanding to the relms such as wireless camera network etc., which makes it a widly use source coding with high compression rate and outstanding decoding performance. This article study the DSC from thoery to implementation and then to the application, including the following aspects:we first introduce the thoery fundation of DSC:Slepian-Wolf coding theory and Wyner-Ziv coding theory. Secondly, we give seperate illustration of two ways to implement DSC, one is based on Syndrome, while the other is based on parity, after each implementation, the simulation results are shown to verify the performance of DSC. In the last chapter of this article, we take the parallel multi-view video system for an example to introduce the application of DSC in wireless camera network. Here, we study the key technology of multi-view video system:disparity compensation and disparity search. In order to find an optimal balance point between quality and complexity, we study several modes of disparity search based on different modeling between cameras and scene. After the best disparity search mode is determined, we integrate it into PRISM, the distributed video system based on DSC to form a parallel multi-view video system. At the end of the last chapter, we provide the simulation results of the proposed parallel multi-view video system; by comparison, we will clearly see that the proposed system is able to perform a better reconstruction quality of the video sequence, and at the mean time, proof that the application of DSC in wireless camera network is feasible.
