Thanks to its closed loop, semiconductor ring laser don’t need the grating or cleavage plane can be achieved laser resonance and output through coupler, which makes the semiconductor ring laser is relatively easy to realize in the process. Because of the bistable characteristics, which makes it can be widely used in optical logic operation and optical storage, open up the broad prospects in optical signal processing and other fields. Due to the unique structure of its own, semiconductor ring laser also has unique advantages in generating chaotic signals. Ring waveguide has simple construction and abundant functions, and it’s suitable for integration with other optical device.In this paper, based on the semiconductor ring laser, we have done deeper research of some related content, mainly includes the following contents:(1)We investigate of the development status, classification and application direction of the semiconductor ring laser.(2)We have designed a kind of semiconductor ring laser based on high-order non-spherical reflector. By using ray tracing method, we designed a kind of high order non-spherical reflector which can replace the curve waveguide of ring laser and reduce tangential loss. The excellent transmission performance of this structure has demonstrated by finite difference time domain numerical simulations and comparing with ordinary parabolic reflector. The test results show the threshold current is 60 m A. When the injection bias current is 140 m A, the free-running wavelength is 1541.04 nm, the free spectrum space is 2.78 nm, and the side-mode suppression ratio is greater than 20 d B.(3)We use ray tracing and the finite difference time domain method to design and simulate a novel fan-shaped semiconductor micro ring laser based on elliptical mirror reflector. Compared with the common triangular ring cavity, due to the introduction of the elliptical mirror reflector that the specular reflection loss of this new micro-cavity is very low(1%), the power transmission rate is 93%. At the resonance wavelength of 1576.36 nm, Q value reaches 23318.6. This shows that the fan-shaped micro ring laser has the characteristics of high Q value and low loss.(4)We put forward a kind of structure suitable integration with semiconductor ring lasers and easy to implement of ring laser tuning. According to rigorous coupled-wave theory, plane wave expansion and scattering matrix method, we analyze the reflection and transmission characteristics of single etched groove structure and the stability of the rigorous coupled wave theory. Base on this, we propose a periodic waveguide grating with 1.1μm-wide slot and 7.6μm-wide rib, the reflection spectra of this grating meets the expected goals.At last, we state some future works base on our research contents and recent research progress.
