With the development of modern electronic technology, phase array radar has been widely applied in multi-target tracking, anti-electronic jamming, versatile multi-task. And higher requirements are also proposed to phased array antennas. In this paper, the main research topics are sidelobs and beam pointing of the phased array with the phase quantization errors, and the antenna pattern shaping.Nowadays, because of the excellentcharacteristics, such as low cost, good electrical performance and simple structure, digital phase shifte are generally used in phased array antenna. Digital phase shifter has many discrete states in phase shift, which brought about the problem of phase quantization error. Phase quantization error will produce spurious sidelobes, but also bring about the error of antenna pattern beam pointing. In this paper, the GA method is used to optimize the phase of antenna elements for reducing the influence of the phase quantization error on antenna performance.In certain applications, special requirements are considered on the shape of the antenna pattern, such as cosecant square, flat and so on. And in phased array, diverse radiation patterns can be easily realized by changing the phase relationship between the antenna elements. This beam-shaping method has many benefits, such as fast response, low cost, easy and flexible. In this paper, the GA method is adopted to optimize the phase of antenna elementsfor a good shaped pattern.Above works has been verified in hfss software. And a better effect in antenna beam pointing and pattern shaping can be achieved.
